RED CARD to the man in white

A few hours after Arsenal’s exit from Europe’s finest football competition, I wish to express a quick thought on the way Arsene Wenger’s team gave up on their title dreams at Camp Nou in such a controversial way.

First of all I will not hide my sympathy for the North London club, but as an experienced journalist I tend to pretend that objectivity is part of my repertoire, so here is my quick analysis on the referee’s decision that changed the game, while the score was 1-1 and the Londoners were back on track.

Something is obvious: Barcelona are a better team than the Gunners. Some will say a much better team after checking out the incredible statistics of the game: Arsenal did not have any attempt on Victor Valdes’ goal (the effort they scored was an own-goal from Busquets), besides I am not even speaking about ball possesion. That is a fact, and Rafa “fact” Benitez will surely agree with me.

But the beautiful game, and even more cup football is all about what happens on the pitch on D-day and without Robin van Persie’s dramatic sending off for a second yellow card, the outcome could/would have been way different.

“I didn’t hear the whistle!”

How could you accuse the Dutchman of time-wasting, after he fired the ball off target from an off-side position, pretending he did not hear the referee’s whistle?

Obviously, the World Cup runner-up DID NOT HEAR the man in white’s whistle and just tried to hit the back of the net from a tight angle. Does he have the reputation of being a cheater? I do not think so. Is it fair to think that in such a crowed stadium (95,000 fans attended the game) sometimes you cannot hear the ref. Probably.

And finally regarding the red card, do you think that such a talented player - who has been playing Champions League football for so many years and who even started a World Cup final - will risk to be sent off in such a naïve way? No comment.

Then being reduced to ten men at this point of the game, playing away, already on the back foot and when your legs start to show signs of tiredness is almost a death sentence.

Dear Massimo Busacca, to my mind you wasted a promising game and massively influenced its outcome. Can you look at yourself in the mirror today?

Triste France...

Enfin ! Cette atroce coupe du monde (sans majuscules pour l’occasion) de notre chère équipe de France s’est enfin achevée. Laissez-moi pousser un grand « ouf » de soulagement, tant une qualification pour les huitièmes de finales de l’épreuve aurait prolongé notre sentiment de désolation et même de trahison de la part de ceux qui sont censé nous représenter.

Trahison, c’est un mot que nous avons eu l’occasion d’entendre à de nombreuses reprises ce moi-ci. A bon escient ? Pas forcément, n'est-ce pas, cher ex-capitaine Patrice Evra, que j’espère ne plus jamais voir porter un maillot bleu, blanc, rouge.

Dans le dictionnaire français, il est dit qu’un traître est un énergumène qui nuit à son entourage en trompant sa confiance. Un attaquant aligné en tant que titulaire par son entraîneur lors de matchs décisifs malgré son faible rendement en équipe nationale, qui se permet d’insulter son supérieur hiérarchique, qui plus est publiquement, et donc de se moquer de la notion même d’autorité, n’est-ce pas lui, le traitre qui saborde le navire ?

Et celui qui dénonce, qui pointe du doigt la brebis galeuse qui a toujours mis ses intérêts personnels en avant et non ceux du groupe, comment doit-on le nommer ? Dans le langage de plusieurs joueurs de l’équipe de France, on l’appelle « une balance », quelqu’un qui dénonce. Au moins aura-t-il eu le mérite de faire exploser « l’effectif de France » (et non l’équipe) afin de la faire repartir sur des bases…moins fragiles.

Dépassons les limites du football et pensons « société » : cette équipe ne vous fait-elle pas penser à des jeunes de banlieue, unis contre l’autorité, mais sans solutions dans l'adversité , avec leur langage truffé de fautes de français et une agressivité qui se lit sur les regards ?

Le manque d’éducation est un énorme problème en France, et il s’étend telle la gangrène, comme si beaucoup de parents avaient décidé de faire la grève (sport préféré des français s’il en est) et de ne plus assumer leurs responsabilités. Il n’ya qu’à marcher dans les rues pour se faire bousculer, insulter et pour observer le triste spectacle du manque de civisme et du chacun-pour-soi. « Bonjour », « Merci » ont laissé place aux regards belliqueux.

Les footballeurs n’échappent pas à la règle et nous ont montré leur version du chacun-pour-soi. Leur seule union, leur seul geste fédérateur (pas du tout unanime car probablement dirigé par la force) avait pour but de défendre celui qui a commis une faute grave. Bonjour tristesse.

Le mot équipe ne peut s'appliquer à ces 23 Bleus, divisés entre les gendres idéals (Henry, Lloris, Gourcuff, Planus, Squillaci), les suiveurs et les « chefs de gang » (Evra, Anelka, Abidal, Gallas, Ribery). Messieurs, vous avez blessé vos compatriotes car au lieu de les faire rêver, ou tout simplement les représenter (et cela devrait être un honneur), vous les avez trahi. Vous êtes parti à la chasse au traître ? Regardez-vous dans une glace avant d’accuser autrui.

Finalement, cette équipe est triste et nous a rendu tristes car…elle ressemble à la France.

PS : Pour rappel, Franck Ribery, le « chouchou » des français, ne parle pas correctement notre langue (mes pauvres oreilles saignent encore), se présente en direct à la télévision en chaussettes et oublie qu’il est marié et père de famille lorsqu’il passe ses nuits en compagnie peu convenable… Sans commentaires.

Headlines in the French press on Thursday said much. ‘Thierry Henry did not seek to clear himself’ ‘Disgusted, but dignified’ (Irish reaction), but ultimately ‘France have the ticket in their hand’. The ‘Hand of Henry’ controversy will surely continue to rage for several days – nearly 30,000 were already signed up to the ‘We Irish hate Thierry Henry’ Facebook group within 12 hours of the incident – as well as various petitions to have the game replayed.

Soccer and FIFA do not work like that, however, and Ireland captain Robbie Keane was probably not far off the mark when he told journalists that FIFA simply do not seem to want Ireland in South Africa (at least instead of France). The Cork News caught up with French football journalist Laurent Picard to gage reaction among football supporters en France.

"What a poor night. Even if we shine in the finals next summer, a bitter taste will remain in our mouths, as dirty wins are not part of our repertoire - usually. On Wednesday, it was impossible for Les Bleus’ supporters to celebrate France’s qualification for the next World Cup, after the way we drew with Ireland. Our stars, who all play for the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Barcelona and other big clubs, looked pathetic on the pitch, especially in the first half (what happened to Lassana Diarra?), and bagged their ticket for South Africa thanks to a goal that should have been disallowed for an obvious handball.

I must confess I have always been a massive admirer of Thierry Henry – who is a basketball fan and showed it with his Magic Johnson-like pass – ever since his Monaco years and his rise to the top of world football. But our captain damaged his reputation in the space of a second, and made us look like cheaters. “Yes, it was handball,” he said after the game. Well, tell the referee straight away, Titi.
We French people always like to have a good moan, we do like wine and bread, and we go on strike very often, but we are no cheaters. Believe me, nobody is celebrating in my homeland. As far as I am concerned, my head was down on my way back home.

Of course, it would have been worse if we had lost. Many of us are ashamed, not only of Henry’s “pass”, but also of the Stade de France spectators’ horror show. You do not have the right to boo your own team at half time when a World Cup qualification is in balance. But, and I hate to say it, most of French people like football as a hobby. The passion surrounding this game in my country cannot be compared to the way people experience football in Ireland. I must confess that I am jealous of your commitment to your team, passion, support, and dignity.

I know it is no consolation, but there will be a green part in our hearts next summer, as Ireland deserve, as much as France, to be in the finals. Giovanni Trapattoni’s team is not only made of fighters, but also of talented footballers who can be proud of what they showed.

Exclusif : la confession de Robert Pires

Robert Pires, la star le Villarreal, champion du monde, d’Europe, et d’Angleterre, vit peut-être ses dernières minutes sur le terrain, son contrat se terminant à la fin de la saison. L’homme qui vient de marquer quatre buts en cinq matchs m’a révélé, via un texto envoyé dimanche, à l’issu de la défaite de son équipe à Séville, son désir de rempiler pour une saison de plus avec son club espagnol.

Le français de 36 ans en a vraisemblablement toujours sous les crampons, et se sent capable d’arpenter les terrains de la Liga jusqu’en 2011. Voir Pires, considéré comme une légende à Arsenal, prolonger l’aventure d’une année supplémentaire avec le Sous-marin Jaune, serait une superbe nouvelle pour tous ses fans, et pour les amoureux du beau jeu en général.

Le milieu de terrain offensif a prouvé lors des dernières semaines qu’il est encore capable de faire la différence et de sauver son équipe d’un début de saison catastrophique. Le voir signer un dernier bail au Madrigal serait une récompense pour ses efforts, et une belle preuve de reconnaissance. N’oublions pas que jouer au top niveau européen à 36 ans n’est pas donné à tout le monde.

Et que dire de l’homme...

Après avoir interviewé des centaines de stars du football international dans toute l’Europe depuis 2005, je peux dire que Pires est, de loin, l’un des plus cordiaux, sympathiques, respectueux, et intéressants joueurs que j’ai eu la chance de rencontrer. Il prend un réel plaisir à discuter football, ne semble jamais blasé ou lassé par sa première passion, et est toujours disponible pour commenter l’actualité de son ancien club, Arsenal.

J’espère donc de tout mon cœur que le président Fernando Roig aura la bonne idée de proposer à Pires de rester au club une saison de plus, avant de laisser les média français s’arracher ses services.

Villarreal star, World champion and Arsenal legend Robert Pires, may be playing is last-ever season as a professional footballer, as his contract with the Yellow Submarine is due to end next summer. But the talented Frenchman, 36, exclusively told me on Sunday, through a text message sent following his side’s narrow defeat in Seville, that he wishes to sign another short-term deal with the Spanish side.

The midfielder is still sharp and has proved that he is far from finished, after helping Villarreal out of the relegation zone, and scoring four goals in the last five games in all competitions.

I will not hide that seeing Pires extend his career to another year would be great news to me, as I massively respect the man as a footballer, but also as a human being. He is always available to speak about his old club Arsenal and anything that is happening in football. Besides, he never looks bored when speaking about his first passion.

To finish, I must say that, after interviewing many world-class footballers throughout Europe since 2005, Pires is one of the most interesting, respectful, polite and friendly players I have met. For that reason, I wish he extends his stay at the Madrigal and proves wrong the coaches that did not believe in him.

CHELSEA star Salomon Kalou has revealed to the News of the World that he had other options in the summer but feels he made the right decision in staying at Stamford Bridge.

After signing a new three-year contract in West London, the Ivory Coast international is feeling settled and enjoying his football under Carlo Ancelotti.

Deputising impressively for his fellow countryman Didier Drogba in midweek, he atoned for an early miss in the Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid by scoring twice in the 4-0 victory.

With any doubts about his future erased, Kalou is confident he will see out his new deal in the capital.

"I am not sure whether this was my best-ever game with Chelsea or the best game of my career but I felt very good and free.

"Obviously, the fact that I recently signed a new deal helped me relax and gave me the extra confidence I need to step up my game.

"You always have other options during the summer and obviously you think about it, but I think I took the right decision. Anyway, it is not the time to speak about a transfer whatsoever because I have signed a new contract.

"To be honest, I expect to be a Chelsea player until 2012.

"Signing this deal is very good news for me. What I do is show my commitment to this football club when I'm on the pitch."

REYES: I'M NO GUNNERS FLOP

JOSE ANTONIO REYES believes his spell in England with Arsenal was a learning experience, even though some pundits will always label him a Gunners flop.

The Spaniard, only the second player ever to be sent off in an FA Cup final, arrived from Sevilla with a huge reputation but struggled to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League.

A loan move to Real Madrid preceded his switch to Atletico and he has told the News of the World that he missed his homeland and was keen to return to Spain.

After making a substitute appearance in Atletico's 4-0 Champions League defeat at Chelsea, Reyes acknowledged he was always going to receive a rough ride from the home fans after scoring twice to knock them out of the FA Cup back in 2004.

"Obviously something special is in the air every time I'm back and playing away to an English team," he told the News of the World.

"Chelsea was a special game because they used to be my rivals when I was an Arsenal player.

"The home fans gave me a noisy reception, which is something you have to accept as it's part of the game. Once you wear the Arsenal shirt, you become Chelsea's enemy.

Homesick

"The game didn't go our way despite our good display in the first half. We looked as if we gave up in the last part of the game but you must reckon that the scoreline spoke for itself.

"Playing in England was a massive experience for me. Even if people don't think I made it here, I grew up as a human being and learnt a lot.

"Anyway, I keep good memories of my spell with Arsenal, which is a club I'll always respect. Playing in this country was an opportunity. But I was homesick and decided to move back to Spain."

Les plus forts ? Evidement, c’est les verts.

Le sort en a décidé ainsi : l’équipe de France de football devra se débarrasser de l’Irlande afin de se qualifier pour la prochaine Coupe du Monde. Autant dire que les Bleus seront opposés à un adversaire coriace qui ne fera pas de complexe d’infériorité. Voici, en quelques lignes, le portrait des joueurs irlandais à surveiller.

Commençons tout d’abord par la star de l’équipe, Robbie Keane. Le co-capitaine de Tottenham est un attaquant de flair, doté d’une excellente frappe et d’un caractère de gagneur. William Gallas, qui a bien souvent joué contre les Spurs, aura droit à un avant-goût du talent de Keane lors du très attendu Arsenal v Tottenham à la fin du mois.

Intéressons-nous maintenant au dernier rempart des verts : le prodigieux Shay Given. Le gardien de Manchester City est tout simplement le meilleur joueur de la Premier League à son poste, capable d’arrêts impensables et de parades à dégouter le plus prolifique des attaquants. Thierry Henry et consorts devront rester patients et garder leur calme face au mur qu’est Given.

Côté défense, l’Irlande n’est pas dépourvue de talent. Les noms de Richard Dunne, récemment transféré à Aston Villa et buteur contre Chelsea, et John O’Shea, l’un des hommes de confiance de Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United) parlent d’eux-mêmes. Ces piliers de la sélection verte ont l’expérience des grands rendez-vous, et ne seront pas du tout impressionnés de jouer face aux Bleus.

Ajoutons une pincée de folie à cette recette irlandaise. Le fantasque Stephen Hunt de Hull – qui a fracturé le crane de Petr Cech en 2006 - et l’ailier dribbleur Aiden McGeady du Celtic, sont des attaquants imprévisibles à garder sous haute surveillance.

L’opposition sera donc relevée, les 14 et 18 novembre prochains, et cette place pour le mondial sera très chère. Mais la menace numéro 1 des irlandais est sans nul doute italienne. En effet, l’entraîneur Giovanni Trapattoni, fin tacticien, a plus d’un tour dans son sac pour surprendre le fort prévisible Raymond Domenech…

La France mal « barrée »

L’équipe de France a finalement obtenu son billet pour les barrages de la Coupe du Monde, en finissant sa campagne sur deux victoires, somme toute logiques, face à des adversaires largement à sa portée. Place maintenant au tirage au sort, entre l’Irlande, l’Ukraine, la Slovénie et la Bosnie-Herzégovine. Quelles équipes sont bonnes à prendre, et quelles équipes sont à éviter ?

Affronter l’Ukraine, qui s’est payé le luxe de battre une Angleterre qui avait emporté tout ses matchs de poule, ne serait pas idéal, tant les coéquipiers d’Andriy Shevchenko sont habitués aux matchs couperets. Cette sélection est de loin la plus expérimentée des quatre.

Vient ensuite l’Irlande. Même si les Bleus ont déjà réussi cet exploit, l’emporter chez les verts et face à leur bouillant public de passionnés n’est jamais chose facile. Plusieurs joueurs irlandais sont des adeptes des joutes de la Premier League, tel Stephen Hunt, et l’entraîneur Giovanni Trapattoni est un des tacticiens les plus respectés au monde.

Attention à l’excès de confiance, si la France tombe sur la Slovénie, qui a bien faillit se qualifier directement pour la Coupe du Monde. Mais il est vrai que cette sélection ne fait plus peur depuis fort longtemps, et ne s’est pas qualifié pour une grande compétition internationale depuis des lustres. Il faut tout de même garder un œil sur trois joueurs slovène qui connaissent bien le football français : Bostjan César (Grenoble) et les sochaliens Valter Birsa et Bostjan Jokic.

Last but no least, la Bosnie-Herzégovine est une jeune nation qui grimpe dans la hiérarchie du football mondial, et dont l’attaque impressionne. Un joueur de cette équipe est à surveiller comme le lait sur le feu : Edin Dzeko, la star de Wolfsburg, véritable machine à buts d’1m92. Emir Spahic, révélation de ce début de saison en Ligue 1 avec Montpellier, est un des cadres de la Bosnie, qui compte également dans ses rangs le lyonnais Miralem Pjanic et l’insatiable Vedad Ibisevic.

En quelques mots, la France est à la fois si loin et si proche de la Coupe du Monde, et un échec au stade des barrages serait une véritable catastrophe pour notre football, qui n’a pas connu tel sort depuis 1994…

Adebayor, shame on you !

Cette semaine, je souhaite m’exprimer au sujet d’Emmanuel Adebayor, qui est devenu l’un des joueurs les plus détesté d’Angleterre en l’espace de 90 minutes. Le togolais de Manchester City, qui s’est fait un nom sur la scène international au sein d’Arsenal, a tenté de blesser son ancien coéquipier Robin van Persie, puis a provoqué des milliers de fans des Gunners en célébrant son but (le troisième de son équipe, 4-2 score final) devant la tribune visiteurs.

Pourquoi « Ade » s’est-il conduit de la sorte ? Des rancœurs passées on visiblement resurgit durant ce match, riche en émotion. Après visionnage des images, il est tout simplement évident que l’attaquant a tenté de blesser Van Persie au visage. Il a également été coupable de plusieurs gestes violents sur ses anciens coéquipiers, malgré le fait qu’on lui prête une certaine amitié avec Alexandre Song et Emmanuel Éboué.

C’était écrit. Le puissant joueur africain devait marquer contre son ancien club. Mais quand la plupart des joueurs refusent de célébrer les buts marqués contre leur ancien club, par signe de respect pour leurs anciens partenaires, fans, et tout simplement employeurs, Adebayor a traversé tout le terrain en hurlant et glissé de tout son long sur la pelouse, pile face aux fans d’Arsenal.

La réaction, fort logique, des supporters en question, blessés dans leur amour propre, a bien entendu été violente : jets de projectiles et tentatives d’intrusion sur le terrain.

« Marquer et jouer aussi bien était suffisant, Emmanuel, vous n’aviez pas besoin de provoquer le public qui, de plus, vous nourrit en allant au stade chaque fin de semaine. Avez-vous oublié qui vous a permis de signer ce contrat record avec City ? Arsenal bien sûr, qui a cru en vous alors que vous étiez en conflit avec Monaco. Le respect se mérite, cher monsieur, et apparemment vous n’en connaissez pas la définition. Que vous est-il passé par la tête ? »

Quel bel exemple pour les jeunes joueurs et pour les jeunes tout court, sans cesse exposés à des situations et images violentes ! Provoquer les gens, les rendre agressif, aller « au contact », chercher le conflit, n’est-ce pas une preuve de grande bêtise ? Adebayor se dit très religieux, mais, visiblement il n’est pas fidèle à ses principes : il n’a pas tendu la joue mais plutôt montré les dents.

Le manque d’élégance et de discernement d’Adebayor en ont donc fait un personnage détestable et à la mémoire courte. L’on a beau être l’un des meilleurs footballeurs au monde, la classe, ça ne s’achète pas.

Appelez le « Cristiano » Eduardo

Immense polémique de ce côté-ci de la Manche cette semaine : Eduardo, l’avant-centre croate d’Arsenal, a été accusé de plongeon lors du match de Champions League face au Celtic. Arsène Wenger a défendu son protégé bec et ongles et s’est dit scandalisé de le voir sanctionné par les hautes instances du football a-posteriori, alors que l’arbitre du match avait accordé un penalty.

Les images sont explicites. Eduardo, qui bénéficie d’une certaine côte de sympathie en Angleterre après sa terrible fracture qui aurait pu mettre un terme à sa carrière, a bel et bien trompé l’arbitre en se laissant tomber face à Arthur Boruc. Après visionnage des images, il est clair que "Edu" s'est laissé aller dans la zone de vérité.

La donne est simple. L’attaquant international a triché et doit être sanctionné. Je déteste viscéralement toute forme de tricherie, que ce soit sur un terrain de sport ou dans la vie en général. Et lorsque la bêtise frappe, quoi de mieux que la sanction pour servir d’exemple et éviter que cela ne se reproduise ?

Le plongeon est un cancer pour le ballon rond, et son vaccin pourrait bien être l’arbitrage vidéo et la suspension. Mes mots vous paraissent peut-être forts, mais lorsque l’on est un vrai passionné de football, l’on en parle avec ferveur, implication et émotion.

Je souhaite également rebondir sur un aspect horripilant mis en lumière par cette « affaire Eduardo ».

La couverture du football et du sport en Angleterre est fantastique et entretient la passion. Mieux encore, elle attise la flamme qui brûle en chaque fan que nous sommes. Mais je tiens à souligner les relents de xénophobie qui ont émergés suite à cette polémique.

Bon nombre de supporters et malheureusement de journalistes britanniques ont sauté sur l’occasion pour nous offrir une énième fois le couplet : joueurs étrangers = plongeurs qui nuisent au bon déroulement de la Premier League. Comme si nous latins avions le monopôle de la tricherie. Le seul mot me venant à l’esprit est « stéréotype ».

Steven Gerrard et Wayne Rooney (sans oublier le nordique Morten Gamst Pedersen) ont prouvé chacun leur tour que les tricheurs viennent de partout. Et apparemment, le chauvinisme britannique transforme parfois les lunettes de certains journalistes en œillères.

La Premier League est bien moins excitante depuis les départs de Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo et Xabi Alonso, et ses stars restent Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres ou encore Cesc Fabregas. C’est cette conjugaison de talents venus du monde entier, additionnée à la ferveur locale, qui fait de ce championnat un monument, et l’oublier serait un péché, chers confrères.

Arsenal ou l’art de se tirer une balle dans le pied

Voici ma réaction à la défaite 2-1 d’Arsenal à Manchester United samedi dernier, alors que les londoniens avaient prit le pas sur leurs hôtes et ouvert le score grâce à une belle frappe d’Andrey Arshavin, avant qu’un penalty de Wayne Rooney, suivit cinq minutes plus tard d’un but contre son camp d’Abou Diaby, n’offrent une drôle de victoire aux champions en titre.

Les hommes d’Arsène Wenger me fascinent grâce à leur jeu collectif léché, leurs redoublements de passes, la disponibilité et le mouvement perpétuel de joueurs pour la plupart dotés d’une aisance technique au delà de la moyenne. Mais il y a rarement de place pour les comptes de fées dans le football de haut niveau, et lorsque vient le moment d’assoir leur domination et de tuer le match, les Gunners tirent trop souvent à blanc.

Le moment décisif de ce match a sans doute été l’impressionnant arrêt-reflexe de Ben Foster, pas franchement à son avantage lors de cette rencontre - sans doute trop lourde pour ses jeunes épaules - alors que Robin van Persie avait l’occasion de faire la décision à bout portant.

Je suis tout simplement scandalisé par la couverture médiatique du match Marseille v Bordeaux, le plus gros choc depuis le lancement de la nouvelle saison de Ligue 1. Je saute donc sur mon clavier pour vous expliquer les raisons de mon exaspération envers les grands médias français.

L’arbitre du match, Antony Gautier, a refusé un but valable à l’attaquant girondin Jussie à une petite minute du coup de sifflet final sans raison apparente.

Ce cher homme en noir a jugé judicieux de signaler une faute de Mickael Ciani pour une légère poussette sur Taye Taiwo, fait de jeu tellement courant et inévitable, alors que ce dernier n’était pas impliqué dans l’action qui a mené au but bordelais. En réalité, le bordelais a même rendu service à son adversaire direct en le poussant vers le point de chute du ballon.

Ce splendide coup de tête qui s’est écrasé dans la cage olympienne à une petite minute de la fin du temps réglementaire garantissait aux champions en titre une belle victoire en terre hostile. Hors, ce cher arbitre a faussé la donne, et ne se fera certainement pas tirer les oreilles par ses pairs ni même par les médias sportifs français.

Mes chers confrères, toujours prêts a diminuer l’importance d’événements marquants, ont choisit d’occulter LE fait d’un match durant lequel Antony Gautier n’a pas brillé, loin s’en faut.
